      House rules

Saved in this browser. Popular house rules explains these and others, such as proper nouns and recycling blanks.

      Scoring, quickly

      Turn score
      • Add the value of every letter in every new word formed.
      • Letter premiums first, then word premiums.
      • A premium square counts only on the turn it is covered.
      • Two double-word squares in one word: ×4. Two triple-word: ×9.
      • A tile shared by two new words scores in both, with its premium applied to both.
      Bingo (all seven tiles)

Play all seven tiles from your rack in one turn and add 50 points, after all premiums.

      Blanks

A blank is worth zero, always, even on a double-letter square. It still triggers a word premium on the square it sits on, and that premium still multiplies the rest of the word.

      First move

The opening word covers the centre star, which counts as a double word square.

      Refilling your rack

At the end of your turn, draw back up to seven, as many as you played. Always, not only when stuck. One tile at a time, no looking in the bag.

      Ending the game
      • Play ends when one player uses their last tile and the bag is empty, or after six scoreless turns in a row.
      • Every player subtracts the value of their unplayed tiles.
      • The player who went out adds the total of everyone else's unplayed tiles.
      • Highest score wins. On a tie, the higher score before adjustment wins.

      Rules that get argued about

      Challenges

Challenge before the next player draws. If the word is invalid the tiles come back and that player scores nothing. If it is valid, the challenger loses their next turn under the standard rules. Tournament penalties vary, and many families use none.

      Direction of play

Your own tiles must sit in one straight line, across or down, with no gaps. That line may still form words in the other direction, and every one of them scores.

      Exchanging tiles

Instead of playing, swap any number of tiles, but only while seven or more tiles remain in the bag. It uses your whole turn and scores nothing.

      What is not allowed
      • Proper nouns, abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes on their own.
      • Words needing an apostrophe or hyphen.
      • Moving a tile once it has been scored.

      Super Scrabble: what's different

Super Scrabble is the big version of the game, launched in 2004. It has a larger board, twice as many tiles and quadruple-score squares, so games run longer and scores run higher. Most of the rules are the same as standard Scrabble.

      The board and tiles

      • The board is 21 by 21: 441 squares, against 225 on a standard board.
      • There are 200 tiles, twice as many as a standard set, including 4 blanks.
      • Each player still holds 7 tiles on their rack.
      • It's for 2 to 4 players, and the bigger bag suits 3 and 4 player games best.

      Quadruple squares

      • A quadruple letter square scores the letter on it four times.
      • A quadruple word square scores the whole word four times. They sit near the outside of the board, at the four corners.
      • As in standard Scrabble, add the letter premiums first, then apply the word premiums.
      • A word across a quadruple word and a double word square scores ×8. Quadruple and triple word together score ×12.

      A worked example

You play ZAX with the Z on a quadruple letter square and the X on a double word square.

      • Z is 10 × 4 = 40, A is 1, X is 8. That's 49.
      • The double word square doubles it to 98.

In the calculator, type ZAX, tap the Z and pick QL, then tap the X and pick DW. It works out 49 × 2 = 98 for you.

      What stays the same

      • Letter values are the same as standard Scrabble. Tile values →
      • Using all 7 tiles in one turn adds 50 points.
      • The first word covers the centre square, which doubles its score.
      • At the end, players subtract their unplayed tiles, and a player who went out adds everyone else's.

      Using this score keeper

      • It works like the standard score sheet, with two extra squares in the calculator: quadruple letter (QL) and quadruple word (QW). Pick the square under each tile and it works out ×8 or ×12 itself.
      • For a single quadruple word square, pick QW under that tile. It multiplies the word by 4.
      • Super Scrabble games are saved separately from standard games, so you can keep one of each going on the same device.
