      House rules

Saved in this browser. Popular house rules explains these and others, such as proper nouns and recycling blanks.

      Scoring, quickly

      Turn score
      • Add the value of every letter in every new word formed.
      • Letter premiums first, then word premiums.
      • A premium square counts only on the turn it is covered.
      • Two double-word squares in one word: ×4. Two triple-word: ×9.
      • A tile shared by two new words scores in both, with its premium applied to both.
      Bingo (all seven tiles)

Play all seven tiles from your rack in one turn and add 50 points, after all premiums.

      Blanks

A blank is worth zero, always, even on a double-letter square. It still triggers a word premium on the square it sits on, and that premium still multiplies the rest of the word.

      First move

The opening word covers the centre star, which counts as a double word square.

      Refilling your rack

At the end of your turn, draw back up to seven, as many as you played. Always, not only when stuck. One tile at a time, no looking in the bag.

      Ending the game
      • Play ends when one player uses their last tile and the bag is empty, or after six scoreless turns in a row.
      • Every player subtracts the value of their unplayed tiles.
      • The player who went out adds the total of everyone else's unplayed tiles.
      • Highest score wins. On a tie, the higher score before adjustment wins.

      Rules that get argued about

      Challenges

Challenge before the next player draws. If the word is invalid the tiles come back and that player scores nothing. If it is valid, the challenger loses their next turn under the standard rules. Tournament penalties vary, and many families use none.

      Direction of play

Your own tiles must sit in one straight line, across or down, with no gaps. That line may still form words in the other direction, and every one of them scores.

      Exchanging tiles

Instead of playing, swap any number of tiles, but only while seven or more tiles remain in the bag. It uses your whole turn and scores nothing.

      What is not allowed
      • Proper nouns, abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes on their own.
      • Words needing an apostrophe or hyphen.
      • Moving a tile once it has been scored.

How to use this score sheet

This page replaces the paper score pad. Keep it open on a phone, tablet or laptop beside the board, type each player's score as they finish their turn, and the totals look after themselves. Nothing is uploaded: the game is saved in your own browser, so you can close the tab and pick it up later on the same device.

      Starting a game

      1. Press New game and choose 2, 3 or 4 players. The previous game is kept under Past games. To change the number of players later, use the + and − beside Players.
      2. Click each Player heading and type a name.
      3. Decide who goes first. The usual way is for everyone to draw a tile, and the letter closest to A starts (a blank beats everything).

      Entering scores

      • Type a player's score for the turn in their column. Tab or Enter moves to the next box along the row.
      • A pass or a tile exchange scores nothing, so type 0 or leave the box empty.
      • Prefer to let the site add it up? Tap Score a word, type the word, then tap each tile and pick the square it sits on: plain, double or triple letter, or double or triple word.
      • Need more rows? Add turn puts a new one at the bottom. Hover a row and press × to delete it if you added one by mistake.
      • The leader's total turns gold, and a gold bar appears under their name.

      Finishing a game

The end of the game has two adjustments, and the sheet has a row type for each so the arithmetic stays visible:

      • "Tiles left" row (−left). Type the value of the tiles each player still holds. These are subtracted from their totals.
      • "Went out" row (+out). If one player used all their tiles, type the combined value of everyone else's leftover tiles in that player's column. It is added to their total.

See the scoring guide for a worked example.

      Using the turn timer

The timer is optional, and handy when a game is dragging. Choose a preset or type your own length in seconds, then press Start at the beginning of each turn. The clock turns red in the last ten seconds and a short bell chime plays when time is up. Press Test alarm to check your volume first. The timer remembers your chosen length.

      Good to know

      Common questions

Is this Scrabble score keeper free?

Yes. It is free to use for 2 to 4 players, with no sign-up needed.

Where are my Scrabble scores saved?

In your own browser, on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, so the game is still there if you come back on the same device and browser.

Can it work out the score of a word for me?

Yes. Tap Score a word, type the word and pick the board square under each tile. The calculator adds up the letters, the double and triple squares, and the 50-point bingo bonus. You can also just type each score in.

How many points is a bingo in Scrabble?

A bingo, playing all seven tiles in one turn, earns a 50-point bonus. If your family plays with a different bonus, you can change it under House rules.

Can I add or remove a player during a game?

Yes. Use the + and − beside Players, between 2 and 4 players. Removing a player who has scores asks you to confirm first.

Can I use it with any Scrabble set?

Yes. It only adds up scores, so it works with any set. For a paper version, use the printable score sheet.
