Two player word games: the best picks for pairs
Independent picks: nobody pays to be listed. Links to Amazon are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Scrabble itself works well for two. If you want something shorter or different, try Upwords for a stacking twist, Boggle for a quick race, or Codenames: Duet if you would rather team up than compete. Many word games are built for groups, so this guide sticks to the ones that suit a pair.

Which two player word game should you pick?
Pick by mood: a long think, a quick race, or a team effort. The table covers every game in this guide.
| Game | How it plays | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Scrabble | Take turns building words on a board and scoring points | A relaxed evening |
| Upwords | Stack tiles on top of letters already played | Scrabble fans who want a twist |
| Boggle | Find words in a grid of letter cubes | A fast head-to-head |
| Codenames: Duet | Give one-word clues to find hidden agents together | Couples who like to cooperate |
| Scrabble Slam and Quiddler | Card games built on words | Short games and travel |
| Bananagrams and Tapple | Race to build words, or to name them before the timer ends | Fast, noisy fun |
| Ghost and Last Letter | Spoken games, no gear | Car rides and waiting in line |
Scrabble
Scrabble is a good two-player game, and it plays with 2 to 4. Each player holds a rack of seven tiles and takes turns laying words on the board. With two players you wait less, so games move faster than with four.
Keep score with our score keeper and use the scoring guide to check premium squares. If you find a game runs long, add a sand timer to each turn.
For something with a rotating board, see our guide to which Scrabble set to buy. Or try the Words With Friends app, which is free to play and built for two players taking turns.
Upwords
Upwords keeps the Scrabble feel but changes the board. You can play across or down, or stack a tile on top of a letter to change a word, and the higher you stack, the more you score. The listing says it has 100 letter tiles, a rotating game board, 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up, and a solo mode.
Players start with seven tiles each, and you earn bonus points for using all seven in one turn. It is a good second game for two people who already own Scrabble.
Boggle
Boggle is a quick head-to-head. The Hasbro classic comes with a grid base, 16 letter cubes, and a lid with a built-in sand timer, and the listing says it is for ages 8 and up. You find words in touching letters before the timer ends. Only words you found alone score, so the obvious ones cancel out.
With two players that rule is harsh, because you will share many words. It is still a good short game for a spare few minutes.
Codenames: Duet
Codenames: Duet is a cooperative word game built for two. You and your partner each see part of a key and take turns giving one-word clues and a number to help the other find 15 hidden agents in a 5 by 5 grid. Pick the assassin and the game ends. The publisher lists a play time of 15 minutes.
One board game forum thread calls it probably the best word game for two. It suits couples who would rather work together than compete. It is not a Scrabble-style game, as it tests clues and word association, not spelling.
Quick card games
Scrabble Slam is a card game for 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up, in which you change one letter at a time in a four-letter word.
Quiddler is a card game where you make words from the cards in your hand, and the hands grow bigger as the rounds go on. It is listed for ages 8 and up and is sometimes suggested for pairs. It fits in a bag, so it is good for travel.
Racing games: Bananagrams and Tapple
Bananagrams has no board and no turns, so two players race to build their own crossword grid from the same pile of tiles. The listing says it is for ages 7 and up, and a hand can take as little as 5 minutes. Agree on a dictionary first, as arguments over words are the main risk.
Tapple is a timer game for 2 to 8 players, ages 8 and up. You choose a category card, press the timer, then name words in that category that start with a certain letter and press that letter's tab on the wheel. It is a party game that also works for two.
Games that need no gear
Some of the best two-player word games need nothing at all. These two come from REI's list of word games for campfires and airports.
- Last letter, first letter: pick a category and say a word. Your partner must say a new word that starts with the last letter of yours.
- Ghost: take turns adding a letter to spell a longer word, without being the one who completes a full word.

Other games worth knowing about
A board game forum thread also names Paperback, a card game where you build words to buy better cards, as a strong pick for two. We have not added a buy link for it. Our games like Scrabble guide covers more word games by style and group size.
How to choose
If you both like Scrabble, stay with Scrabble and add Upwords as a change. If you want short games, take Boggle or Scrabble Slam. If you want to team up, buy Codenames: Duet. And if you need a game for a car ride, play Ghost.
Whichever you pick, our Scrabble rules and house rules pages help you set up fair play for two.
Common questions
What is the best two player word game?
For most pairs, Scrabble is the easiest choice because you already know it. For a different feel, Upwords or Codenames: Duet are good picks, depending on whether you want to compete or cooperate.
Is Scrabble a good game for two players?
Yes. It plays with 2 to 4 players, and a two-player game moves quickly because you wait less between turns.
What word game can two people play without a board?
Bananagrams has no board, and Boggle, Tapple, and Scrabble Slam do not need one either. Ghost and last letter, first letter need nothing at all.
What is a good cooperative word game for two?
Codenames: Duet. You and your partner see different parts of a key and give one-word clues to find all 15 agents together.
What is a good word game for a couple?

Are there free two player word games?
