The best word games for older players have big, clear letters, short rules, and pieces that are easy to pick up. Scrabble with low-vision tiles suits anyone who already loves Scrabble. Bananagrams Big Letter and Boggle are quicker and need no board, and Quiddler is a gentle card game for two or more.

What makes a word game senior-friendly

  • Letters you can read across the table. Large, high-contrast letters matter more than anything else.
  • Pieces that are easy to handle. Thick tiles and cards are easier for stiff or arthritic fingers than thin cardboard tokens.
  • Short rules. If the rules fit on one page, nobody spends the evening looking them up.
  • A game you can play seated. All the games here play around a table.
  • Flexible pace. Games without a timer, or where you can ignore the timer, suit players who like to take their time.

Scrabble, made easier to see

Replacement low-vision tiles have bold black letters on white tiles, so you can keep the board you already own and make the letters far easier to read.

The Scrabble Deluxe Edition has a board that turns to face each player and a grid that holds the tiles in place, so a bump does not scatter the words. A separate lazy Susan does the same job for a standard board.

Adding up scores is often the fiddliest part. Our free score keeper does the math, including double and triple squares, and works on a tablet you can zoom in on. See our large print Scrabble guide for more ways to make the game easier to see.

Quicker games with big pieces

Bananagrams Big Letter is the same game as Bananagrams with large, easy-to-read tiles. Each player builds their own grid of words, so there is no shared board to read from a distance.

Upwords plays like Scrabble, but you can stack tiles on top of letters already played to make new words. The tiles are chunky and the grid holds them steady.

Boggle gives you three minutes to find words in a grid of letter cubes, so a beginner and a strong speller can play side by side. Super Big Boggle has a bigger grid that is easier to scan.

Games for two

Quiddler is a card game: you make words from the letter cards in your hand, and each round deals one more card. The cards are easy to hold, and there are no small pieces to drop.

Codenames: Duet is a cooperative word-clue game for two, so you play together rather than against each other. See our two-player word games guide for more.

Games for groups and senior centers

Tapple is a quick-fire game: name a word in the category that starts with a free letter, press the letter down, and pass it on before the timer runs out. Switch the timer off for a gentler game.

For a larger group, play Boggle in teams, or run a Scrabble game with two players sharing each rack. Our house rules page has ideas for gentler games, such as no time limit and free word checks.

Pen and paper games

  • Crosswords and word searches, in a large-print puzzle book.
  • Hangman, played on a big sheet of paper or a whiteboard.
  • Categories: pick a letter, then everyone writes a fruit, a town and a name starting with it.
  • Word ladders: change one letter at a time to turn CAT into DOG.

Do word games help memory?

Word games are a good way to spend time with others and keep the mind busy, but be careful with big promises. The National Institute on Aging says that some structured cognitive training has shown benefits in a large trial, but that evidence for a lasting effect from everyday activities is "not definitive", and it advises caution about claims that games improve memory. Play them because they are enjoyable and sociable. That alone is reason enough.

Making any game easier

  • Light: play under a good lamp aimed at the table, not into anyone's eyes.
  • Contrast: a plain, dark tablecloth makes light tiles and cards stand out.
  • Seating: seat players so nobody reads the board upside down, or use a turntable.
  • Scoring: let one person keep score, or use our printable score sheet, which you can enlarge before you print.
  • Time: agree in advance that nobody is rushed.
